Anticipated to further overactivate this system in sepsis by recruiting and priming leukocytes. However, we found that G-CSF pretreatment was protective in non-neutropenic rodents againstLPS-induced septic organfailure, "ie, inan animal model where microbial killing by granulocytes is not required. It is well established that the macrophage product tumor necrosis factor TNF ; -a isa distal mediator of septic organ failure." In our animal study, we found that G-CSF pretreatment attenuated lipopolysaccharide LPS ; -inducible serum TNF concentrations in vivo, as well as ex vivo LPSinducible TNF release of different macrophage populat i o n while there was no similar effect of G-CSF in vitro '~ on macrophage cultures. These results indicate that G-CSF treatment presumably alters the septic cytokine response indirectly by undefined factors or effector cells. It is now of interest to determine whether G-CSF treatment results in similar alterations of the cytokine response of human peripheralwhiteblood cells to inflammatory stimuli. The approach chosen consisted of an in vivo treatment of healthy volunteers with G-CSF followedby ex vivo exposure of whole bloodtowarddefinedstimuli. To cover abroad spectrum of stimuli of host defense against infectious challenge, a variety of model compounds other than the Gramnegative cell wall component LPS was used in the in vitro experiments. UNESCO joined the world community in celebrating Gandhi' birth centenary in 1969. The October 1969 issue of the s UNESCO Courier was dedicated to him , focusing on "The heritage of non-violence". At that time UNESCO republished the selection of Gandhi' writings originally brought out in 1958 ; , s with the title : All men are brothers : Lzfe and thoughts ofMahatma Gandhi as told in his own words. Compiled and edited by Krishna Kripalani, this selection carried an "Introduction" written by Professor Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, at the time Vice-President of India, and later President. Professor Radhakrishnan outlined the main features of Mahatma Gandhi' philosophy and his influence s in promoting international friendship and understanding. The publication reached a wide public and made better known the different aspects of Gandhi' personality and writings; it is already s out of print. As part of the celebration of Gandhi' 125th birth anniversary, s UNESCO invited the Prime M inister of India, Shri P.V. Narasimha Rao, to deliver the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Lecture on the theme: Gandhi in the Global Village. On 12 June 1995, M r Rao paid a visit to the UNESCO House to inaugurate the exhibition on Gandhi, and to deliver the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Lecture. The Prime M inister gifted a bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi to the Director-General; to reciprocate, the Director-General gave the UNESCO medals of Gandhi and Nehru as souvenirs to the Prime M inister. Welcoming the Prime M inister, the Director-General said : "It is a happy coincidence that the Year for Tolerance should be celebrated at the same time as the 125th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, who embodied the spirit of tolerance. This was inherent in his philosophy and practice of non-violence, in his vision of all human beings as engaged in search of Truth that transcended them . Gandhiji was a nationalist, but he was neither parochial nor chauvinist. He was the practitioner of a universal religion that respected all cultures." M r Mayor described Gandhi as "one of the truly great figures of our - or, any - century". Paying personal tribute to the Prime M inister Rao, the DirectorGeneral said that he could not think of a better person to deliver.

TYPE OF PROJECT The project is primarily a training project and is aimed at improving the capacity of the Press Institute of Bangladesh to offer journalism training and to offer training in particular for women journalists. The project also allows to re-evaluate the training needs and for that purpose to convene a national seminar on "Print Media in the New Millennium". The submitters the Press Institute of Bangladesh PIB ; implement the project, which is main training arm of print media in Bangladesh. The PIB is managed by a Director-General appointed by the Government who works under the guidance of a Board consisting of a broad spectrum of representation from independent newspapers IMPLEMENTATION A considerable delay occurred in commencing the project because the Director General post at the PIB felt vacant after the Government change in 2001. With the appointment of an acting Director a contract was establish in June 2002 with PIB to implement the project. The activities included arranging study tours for two staff trainers of PIB, Conducting two day seminar on "Print Media in the New Millennium, Five day training course on management and editorial planning for women journalists, publishing PIB news letter and upgrading training equipment including video facilities. The management of PIB was changed again in August 2002 with the appointment of a new Director. At his request the contract was amended to commence activities from 15 November 2002. Quotations submitted by the PSB to upgrade training facilities were approved and the 2- day dialogue on "Print Media in the new millennium" was held from 03-04 March 2003. Review mission is scheduled from 1011 April. RESULTS Pending CONCLUSIONS Pending.

Cannot be considered as destitute of aromatics. Besides, a dry air favours the development of the aromatic or exciting properties, only in certain species of plants. The most inveterate poisons are produced in the most humid zone of America; and it is precisely under the influence of the long rains of the tropics that the American pimento Capsicum baccatum ; , the fruit of which is often as caustic and fiery as Indian pepper, vegetates best. From all these considerations it follows, first, that the New Continent possesses spices, aromatics, and very active vegetable poisons, peculiar to itself, and differing specifically from those of the Old World; secondly, that the primitive distribution of species in the torrid zone cannot be explained by the influence of climate solely, or by the distribution of temperature, which we observe in the present state of our planet; but that this difference of climates leads us to perceive why a given type of organization develops itself more vigorously in such or such local circumstances. We can conceive that a small number of the families of plants, for instance the musaceae and the palms, cannot belong to very cold and carbenicillin.
Na Ca2 exchange during ischemia and reperfusion in the intact heart. There are 2 possibilities for the mode of operation of the Na Ca2 exchanger during ischemia reperfusion. First, Na Ca2 exchange may continue in the normal, Ca2 efflux mode during ischemia. In this case, overexpression of the Na Ca2 exchanger would be expected to increase Ca2 efflux during ischemia reperfusion, resulting in decreased injury. Second, Na Ca2 exchange could operate in the Ca2 influx mode during ischemia, as previously assumed, leading to increased intracellular Ca2 . According to this second model, overexpression of the Na Ca2 exchanger would be expected to increase Ca2 influx during ischemia reperfusion, resulting in increased injury. We found that, in males, overexpression of the Na Ca2 exchanger reduces postischemic recovery of both contractile function and energy metabolites. This suggests that the Na Ca2 exchanger may play a role in ischemia reperfusion injury and is consistent with the hypothesis that the Na Ca2 exchanger operates in the Ca2 influx mode during ischemia reperfusion. Further support for Na Ca2 exchange operating in the Ca2 influx mode and thereby leading to increased intracellular Ca2 is provided by the observation of higher maximum contracture in the male Na Ca2 exchange overexpressor mice, the extent of contracture being related to intracellular Ca2 levels, 37 provided ATP levels are comparable.38 In addition, alternans were observed in the male transgenic hearts during reperfusion but were absent in the male wild-type hearts. As alternans are thought to be caused by Ca2 overload leading to spontaneous SR Ca2 release, 39, 40 this further supports the existence of elevated calcium in the male transgenic, compared with male wild-type hearts. The observation that decreased postischemic contractile function could not be explained by lower intracellular pH or higher Pi during reperfusion in the Na Ca2 exchange overexpressor mice supports the conclusion that there is greater injury, either reversible stunning ; or irreversible, rather than simply decreased contractility due to inhibition of contractile proteins. Secondary adaptations in Ca2 transport mechanisms in this transgenic mouse model also could give rise to increased intracellular Ca2 and ischemia reperfusion injury. However, studies have demonstrated that the major Ca2 transport mechanisms are unaltered in the Na Ca2 exchange overexpressor mice.13, 14 Secondary adaptations in other ion transport mechanisms cannot, however, be excluded.

In this cross-sectional study of 80 patients from across the spectrum of CKD, increased FGF-23 levels were significantly associated with deteriorating renal function and with decreased calcitriol levels. Importantly, whereas hyperphosphatemia was observed only with advanced renal disease, there was a significant increase in FGF-23 levels in earlier stage CKD. Although the stimulus for increased FGF-23 secretion in the absence of hyperphosphatemia remains unclear, increased serum phosphate was associated with increased FGF-23, which in turn was an independent predictor of increased FePO4. Thus, it seems that during early stages of CKD, FGF-23 may contribute to maintaining the serum phosphate level within the normal and carteolol.

Two unlinked, recessive loci have been characterized in Capsicum spp. that independently confer distinct types of resistance to pepper mottle potyvirus PepMoV ; . The first locus, from C. annuum cv. Avelar, affected the spread of PepMoV through the plant and had no discernible effect on tobacco etch potyvirus HAT isolate; TEV-HAT ; infection J. F. Murphy and M. K. Kyle, Phytopathology 85: 561-566, 1995 ; . The second locus, found in C. chinense PI 159236 and PI 152225, interfered with PepMoV and TEV-HAT infection in plants and in isolated protoplasts. The resistant responses displayed by the C. chinense accessions to PepMoV and TEV-HAT appeared indistinguishable; however, these accessions were both susceptible to a second isolate of TEV, TEV-Mex21. We propose the symbols pvr1 for recessive PepMoV and TEV resistance from the C. chinense accessions and pvr3 for recessive PepMoV resistance from Avelar. pvr1 has been genetically mapped to a small linkage group with synteny to the short arm of tomato chromosome 3. relatively common observation of simply inherited, multivirus resistance M. Marston and M. Jahn, unpublished data ; . Information available thus far suggests that the genetic basis of cosegregation of resistance to related potyviruses is diverse. In pea Pisum sativum ; two clusters of distinct, tightly linked recessive genes confer resistance to overlapping sets of potyviruses Kyle and Provvidenti 1993 ; . Each gene in a cluster apparently confers resistance to one virus, although resistance to bean yellow mosaic virus and resistance to watermelon mosaic virus 2 attributed to the mo allele have not been separated to date. In contrast, extensive efforts in bean Phaseolus vulgaris ; to demonstrate that distinct factors account for cosegregation of dominant conditional resistance to nine potyviruses have not been successful Fisher and Kyle 1994 ; . These results are consistent with the hypothesis that, in this case, a single simple or complex locus may account for resistance. Cosegregation of resistance to three potyviruses, including pepper mottle virus PepMoV ; , tobacco etch virus TEV ; , and potato virus Y PVY ; , has been observed in pepper Capsicum spp. ; for many years e.g., Cook 1960 ; . These three pandemic viruses regularly cause significant crop losses, while at least two other potyviruses, chili veinal mottle virus and pepper veinal mottle virus, are of regional importance Abdalla et al. 1991; Nagai and Smith 1968; Palloix 1992; Watterson 1993; Yoon et al. 1989; Zitter 1972, 1973 ; . Because losses to viral diseases define the primary limitation to production of this crop, much effort has been directed toward the identification of sources of resistance to these potyviruses for the development of resistant pepper cultivars Watterson 1993 ; . A number of Capsicum genotypes are resistant to various ranges of potyviral isolates currently considered to be strains of PepMoV, TEV, and PVY, and a number of resistance genes have been identified to which resistance to more than one virus is attributed Cook and Anderson 1959; Cook 1961; Dogimont et al. 1996; Kuhn et al. 1989; Kyle and Palloix 1997; Nagai and Smith 1968; Sowell and Demski 1977; Zitter 1972 ; . The relationships among these genes have been confused, however, by the involvement of several viruses, each with several strains that can be difficult to distinguish. Further, terms used to describe specific resistance phenotypes have been too vague to allow definitive comparisons. This report focuses on resistance, defined inclusively, that historically has been attributed to a set of alleles at the locus.
