After a short self-introduction of the invited experts, the project leader, Dr. Ulrich Fiedeler, gave a short introduction to the project. Aim of the project is to identify and assess the potential of nanotechnology for replacing hazardous chemicals. At the end of his presentation he outlined the three main issues the preliminary results of the project should be evaluated by: completeness, relevance, and awareness. At the beginning of the discussion, three experts gave their comments on the preliminary results of the project from three different perspectives: science, industry, and environmental perspective. Background: Reports of preventable illness due to medication errors are widespread in Canada. However, quantifying the magnitude of the problem has been hampered by a lack of measurement tools. Canadianspecific indicators, or performance measures, of the safe medication use do not exist. The aim of this study was to develop a set of Canadian consensus-based indicators for the safe use of medication. Methods: A panel of 20 national experts was established from a convenience sample of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, researchers and decision-makers in hospitals and community settings across Canada. After creating a list of candidate indicators from the literature, the final consensus set was chosen by the panel using a Delphi survey process over e-mail. Results: After three rounds, consensus was obtained on 20 medication-use safety indicators: seven related to systems of care, five to prescribingordering, three to monitoring and assessment, three to medication administration, one to preparation and dispensing and one to purchasinginventory management. Seventeen indicators measure a process of care in contrast to health outcome at least 10 have application outside the inpatient setting. Conclusions: The final set of medication-use safety indicators on this tool are diverse in scope and applicable both in-patient and out patient settings. In a nationwide study on the genotype phenotype relationship in AIS, we studied a family with eight children, of whom two were affected with AIS Fig. 1 ; . The parents subjects I-1 and I-2; Fig. 1 ; were of Moroccan descent and first cousins: their fathers were brothers. There was no family history of ambiguous genitalia. Subject II-5 was a 13-yr-old pubertal female patient, with not yet fully developed breasts, few pubic hairs, and no axillary hair Tanner stage M3, P2, A0 ; , a female habitus, and female voice. She was studied after her brother was diagnosed with AIS. The karyotype was 46, XY. Environment Water: Water is a precious commodity in a desert environment. It is essential in the San Dieguito River Valley Regional Open Space Park for the preservation of sensitive plant and animal species, the viability of agricultural enterprises, the health and prosperity of our citizens, enhanced aesthetic value and appropriate recreational use. The management of the water resource in the San Dieguito River Valley is a complicated task requiring continuing study and reordering of priorities to optimize water usage allocations among the competing demands as supplies and technology for storage and reuse change. The water quality and quantity of all underground and surface water bodies shall be optimized through water conservation, water reclamation, erosion control, and pollution control. The objective for the open space park shall be to have the maximum amount of water that is feasible to flow freely and naturally wherever possible in the river valley consistent with enhancement of riparian habitat and sound management of the lagoon ecosystem at the river mouth. Continuing professional study of the water resource to optimize park objectives consistent with other needs shall be encouraged and kaon.

PURPOSE: To compare the abilities of different mfERG measurements to detect diabetic retinopathy. METHODS: Responses from 11 eyes of 11 patients with diabetic retinopathy and 20 eyes of 20 age-matched controls were recorded using VERIS 4 and standard conditions. First order mfERG scalar product amplitude SPA ; , and P1 and N2 implicit times ITs ; were measured at the 103 stimulated retinal locations. Using a "stretching" method Hood and Li, 1997 ; , the amplitude and IT of the first positive peak were also derived. Abnormality was defined as Z-scores 2. Sensitivity of the 5 measures was evaluated by 1 ; counting the number of abnormal mfERGs and 2 ; determining correspondence with zones containing retinopathy. A zone was defined as the putative mfERG location plus its immediate neighbors based on fundus photographs. The Z-score of each zone was assigned by maximum Z-score. RESULTS: Amplitudes obtained by the stretching method and SPA detected few abnormalities, with little correspondence to retinopathy. From 1, 133 mfERGs 103 * 11 eyes ; , the number of abnormalities detected by measuring IT were: 242 by the stretching method, 191 by P1 IT, and 130 by N2 IT. Evaluated by counting the most abnormalities in each eye, ITs determined by stretching were more than twice as effective as P1 and N2 ITs. The three IT measures showed similar sensitivity to severe retinopathy detecting 3 or all 4 edematous areas ; , but in milder cases such as microaneurysms, the stretching method IT had the highest sensitivity 63% ; while P1 and N2 ITs were ~40%.
