Discussion In this report, we describe the results of the first disease-specific MEPD study of the HDAC inhibitor depsipeptide in patients with AML and CLL. This trial utilized a starting dose of depsipeptide of 13 mg m2 over four hours administered on days 1, 8, and 15 every 28 days. In both groups of patients we demonstrated some anti-leukemia activity that was more evident in the CLL patients. Indeed, all seven of the CLL patients with elevated leukocyte counts had a significant decrease during treatment average decrease 58%, range 45-76% ; . The decline in leukocyte count generally occurred within 1-2 treatment cycles and persisted to decrease in patients who continued therapy. The reductions in lymphocyte counts occurred over several days following treatment, often when histone acetylation had partially recovered to baseline levels. This suggests the presence of a secondary event such as re-expression of a previously silenced gene, versus depsipeptide-induced histone acetylation leading directly to death. Although no.

The tree layer is dominated by Norway spruce Picea abies L. ; , with some up to 600 pcs ha ; admixture of rowan Sorbus aucuparia L. ; or pubescent birch Betula pubescens Ehrh. ; up to 130 pcs ha ; in the waterlogged and more open stands. Plots are distributed basically in 4 localities and include two types of plots: First type, "vital stands", are partly endangered stands with vital mature tree layer, so far with relatively scarce bark beetle sanitation: Plots Mo 1, 4, close to Modrava 49N, 1330E ; , on the slope under the Studen Mt., and plots Pl 1820 on the Plech Mt. 4805N, 1350E ; and plots Tr 13 close to this locality, in the saddle between Plech Mt. and Trojmezn Mt. Second type are "declined stands", plots with declined mature trees since 19961998: Plots Py 1, 2 in Pytlck roh locality in the Modrava area, and plots Lu 13 on the slope of Velk Mokrvka Mt. at the end of the Luzen valley, also close to Modrava. These are located in the area of former large scale bark beetle calamity in the 1870-ies, so stands were previously relatively even-aged, probably not with fully autochthonous ecotypes. Thick grass cover and abundant log breakage are typical on this plot. Herbal cover on the particular plots depends mainly on the canopy and humidity of the site Table 2 ; . Main species are: Vaccinium myrtillus, Calamagrostis villosa, Avenella flexuosa, Anthyrium distentifolium. Lower abundance species are: Trientalis europea, Homogyne alpina, Oxalis acetosella, Lycopodium annotinum, Maianthemum bifolium, and on the declined plots Chamaerion angustifo and pima.
A 76-year-old Midwestern man had uneventful Mohs surgery for squamous cell carcinoma of his dorsal hand, with primary closure. He developed tenderness and swelling 6 weeks later. After a symptomatic year and treatments including biopsies, cultures, ineffective courses of antibiotics, incision and drainage, and intralesional steroid, Mycobacterium abscessus was finally isolated. He was treated appropriately and recovered. This case illustrates an unusual infection that may simulate recurrence of malignancy, other infections, and suture reactions, and demonstrates the importance of ongoing clinical judgment in cases which fail to respond to typical therapy.
