We started the playtime process last year with me interpreting the gist of what was going on, for example "She is a baby snake, " or "He is a cook in a restaurant." The children would take it from there. The sign language was used around the table during meal times, and children soon imitated signs for the blessing just as they would other gestures and table talk: "more please" and "thank you" "rice" and "apple" They started asking for signs of other foods. The free play time has evolved such that now the Deaf children sign to the hearing children and I voice it for them. The hearing children are starting to understand more on their own as well. The hearing children who have been here since this started ask me many times each day how to say "Can I be your baby?" or "Make the fence bigger, " or "I want you to move this for me." They watch me carefully, then imitate and sign directly with each other. Some of the children are now doing this on their own without asking me for help. The younger children who joined the class this year approach the Deaf children with sign babble as an attempt to say something. The Deaf children respond with signing and this goes on as an imaginative conversation. I'm sure these gestures are a part of the progression to more formed communication. Circle time is the most fun! ASL has a natural movement to it. The Deaf and hearing children alike wholly participate in circle, whether we are horses galloping, trotting or sleeping, or bulbs growing from the earth to bloom in the sun. Holding hands in a circle is no longer appropriate, especially with singing or speaking. We need our hands for talking and expressing. For meal blessings the signing holds the group together. Early on, the Deaf children were reluctant to cover their eyes in the circle. But once they learned the routine and could trust that someone would nudge them "awake" at the appropriate time, they became content to hide their heads. Social interactions are becoming natural in that the children treat each other the same whether Deaf or hearing. It is fun to have them ask me for a sign phrase and to watch their hands and body and facial expressions imitate the sign and use it. Using the communication the next day on their own has a powerful effect on the children's self-esteem. They seem to glow with an inner strength of satisfaction. One mom told me when she went into her hearing son's bedroom to check on him before she went to sleep, his hands were signing in his sleep. Most children have taught their families the meal blessing in ASL. Eurythmy was a challenge at first because there were two teachers to watch, one leading the eurythmy gestures and the other interpreting the stories. This created a confusing visual overload. The Deaf children then started private sessions with a therapeutic eurythmist on a regular basis. The second year of eurythmy is now successful. The Deaf children follow and move fluidly. They vocalize the sounds as they are moved and I give them brief pictures of the story through sign as we go along. Because of their connection to the visual, the Deaf children seem to understand much of the eurythmy without needing interpretation. It is clear that eurythmy allows Deaf children to experience sound visually. Transitions were initially very challenging. The Deaf children lagged behind and were very slow to make transitions. A meeting with the parents and a Deaf education consultant showed us that the hearing children were getting many early, subtle cues about upcoming transitions that were not accessible to the Deaf children. Understanding this allowed us to add visual cues and signed information early enough to allow the Deaf children to transition easily and this is no longer a problem. The benefits of having a bi-lingual class are manifold. After years of teaching, learning new stories was still a struggle for me, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that learning the fairy tales in ASL along with the English made the memorizing come more fluidly. In the presence of cooperative feedback, increasing g alone could reproduce the acidosis-induced effects reasonably well Table 4 ; . However, the experimental evidence in support of such an increase in g is inconclusive. Most experimental results, based on unloaded velocity of shortening or relaxation of tetanic contractions, suggest that g is either decreased or unchanged with acidosis 35, 41, 51 ; . The only evidence for increased g is based on the observation that acidosis reduces both isometric force and ATPase activity, with the reduction in ATPase activity less than that in isometric force 13, 38 ; . According to the Brenner scheme 7 ; , this would suggest an increase in g with acidosis 38 ; . Evidence for acidosis-induced decrease in rate of force-producing cross-bridge formation exists 31, 41 ; . This could be achieved by a decrease in f, h, or both. However, because acidosis increases relative stiffness in both skeletal and cardiac muscle 29, 32, 41 ; , a decrease in h is most likely. Our model-based analysis indicated that a decrease in h could reproduce acidosisinduced changes reasonably well, except perhaps for the too little change in tmax Table 4 ; . Finally, a reduction in Ca2 -induced myofilamental activation with acidosis has been observed in a variety of preparations 5, 16, 26 ; . A reduced Kon-to-Koff ratio would be necessary to yield observed changes in force pCa relationship and inotropic state. Because Kon is generally thought to be diffusion limited, it is unlikely that Kon is affected by acidosis. In addition, a reduced Kon would increase tmax model-based analysis ; , which is contrary to our observations. An increase in Koff, implemented via a decrease in cooperative feedback decreased ; , reproduces all of the acidosis-induced changes except for Fmax and Srel Table 4 ; . Thus it is reasonable to propose that acidosis affects both h and ; a concomitant decrease in h and reproduces all of the observed changes well Table 4 and Fig. 9 ; . In summary, the modeling efforts, together with the experimental observations, lead us to conclude that 1 ; the presence of cooperative feedback is necessary, and 2 ; inhibition of the transition to the force-producing state and reduced cooperative feedback are likely mechanisms for the acidosis-induced changes.

Companies in some of the industries most closely involved in the country's development process. It is apparent that Korean corporate internationalization is highly concentrated in a relatively small number of manufacturing companies. In general, most of these firms are caught in a kind of sandwich between their original technological leader Japan ; and other Asian fast followers and technological imitators especially China ; . Korean firms have been losing competitiveness in traditional low-cost commodityrelated activities and are obliged to enter into more knowledge-intensive activities, moving from industries and technologies which rely on volume and low production costs to those characterized by quality, value-added and premium prices. The competitive situation is somewhat distinct in each major industry; nonetheless, the direction of change is similar. Some Korean firms, such as SEC, LGE and HMC, are world-class transnationals. They already possess sophisticated globalization strategies and are well advanced in the transition to more sophisticated products, many of which are associated with the shift towards the knowledge economy. Others are smaller textile and apparel producers ; or operate in very traditional activities SK Corp., LS Nikko Copper, Posco ; , or both Eagon ; and have been obliged to globalize in order to remain competitive --even in their home market. This has entailed industrial upgrading, technological innovation and the establishment of a solid global network through OFDI. In different ways, all are defining and implementing more aggressive corporate strategies for this purpose. The internationalization processes of these dominant Korean companies have spanned numerous objectives, including natural-resource-seeking, market-seeking, efficiency-seeking and strategic-asset-seeking. In the rush to internationalize, several Korean TNCs ran into serious problems, which caused them to be more cautious thereafter.43 While the situation varies from industry to industry and firm to firm, it is evident that the last two FDI strategies are becoming more important than the first two in the context of the shift towards the knowledge economy and in relation to the evolution of each firm's global network and surmontil.
As shown in Table 1, the AB rats had lower body weight BW ; and left kidney weight and higher right kidney weight throughout the period after the operation. The heart rate was not significantly different between the 2 groups. The mean carotid arterial pressure was significantly higher and the mean femoral arterial pressure was significantly lower in the AB group than in the sham-operated group from 1 to 21 days after operation. LVEDP was elevated in the AB group from 3 to 21 days after the operation compared with the sham-operated rats. As a result of aortic banding between the right and left renal arteries, plasma renin concentration was 3- to 5-fold higher and the plasma aldosterone concentration was 2-fold higher in the AB rats than in sham-operated rats from 1 to 21 days after the operation. The LV weight BW LV BW ; ratio relative LV weight ; gradually increased after the operation in the AB group and was significantly increased compared with the sham-operated group. The LV levels similarly increased after the operation in a time-dependent manner Figure 1A and 1B ; . In contrast, the plasma levels showed a peak at 1 day after the operation Figure 1D ; . It appears that moss collection is a long-standing income generating enterprise in mid and north Wales. It is evidently lucrative and supports a number of farm incomes in mid-Wales as well as providing a basis for a specialist company in north Wales. The future for the trade appears stable although competition and conservation concerns are increasing it should be possible to counter these with suitable assurances of sustainable management and branding. Before assurances can be given about the biodiversity impacts of mossing it will be necessary to document more fully the species of moss that occur in favoured collection sites and to investigate the impact of mossing on woodland biodiversity and functioning. A survey of the extent of mossing sites in Wales would also help with strategic planning. Incomes to woodland owners is usually at break-even level and does not contribute much to management. The substantial incomes from moss collection suggests that it might be possible to increase the income for woodland owners by a more open form of tendering in effect generating an open market for moss. Mossers suggest that woodlands can be managed for moss on a short rotation and this should be investigated and if shown to be replicable might offer an opportunity for longer term contracts for moss management and greater profit sharing. Sourcing of part-time labour is a problem for small enterprises especially farmers engaged in moss collection. There is also the opportunity to add value by labelling the moss as from Wales and to manufacture more of the hanging baskets or pre-formed hanging basket liners locally. The number of cases of pneumococcal meningitis in the Netherlands can be determined through a clinical microbiology laboratory-based national surveillance of cerebrospinal fluid isolates. Because the laboratories send their isolates of patients to the NRBM on a voluntary base, the actual number of patients with pneumococcal meningitis is underestimated by approximately 20%. For the other disease manifestations, the available information is less reliable due to underreporting septicaemia ; and due to the absence of a specific reporting system pneumonia and otitis media ; . The incidence of pneumococcal disease has been more or less constant during recent years in the Netherlands. Between 200 and 250 cases of meningitis caused by pneumococci are recorded by the NRBM annually. Of these 80 are in children aged 10 years and younger. In 1999 the highest agespecific incidence was observed in children 5 years of age 8.2 100, 000 ; , and a second peak occurred among people aged over 65 years 2.4 100, 000 ; .11 Otitis media is by far the most frequent clinical form of disease among children. The Health Council estimated yearly 160 cases of septicaemia, 7, 500 cases of pneumonia and around 200, 000 cases of otitis media in the Netherlands in children aged 10 and younger.12.

13 flagella elongate, because the quantity of axonemal proteins will continuously increase while the quantity of IFT protein stays constant, so that IFT proteins constitute a continuously decreasing fraction of the total protein. These results confirm our previous immunofluorescence results, that the total quantity of IFT protein per flagellum is independent of flagellar length. We do not, at the present time, have any information about how the quantity of IFT protein is kept constant. IFT proteins within the flagellum self-associate into complexes of particles arranged in a row like cars in a freight-train. Because this higher-level organization could in principle affect transport capacity of the IFT system, we examined the distribution of IFT proteins into multiparticle complexes as a function of length. Cells undergoing flagellar regeneration were fixed and stained to detect the IFT protein IFT52 Figure 2D inset ; , and the number of visible IFT particle aggregates was counted in each image and plotted versus flagellar length Figure 2D ; . For flagella that were 6 microns or less, it was impossible to count the number of complexes because they began to overlap and the resulting bright fluorescence made resolution of individual particles unreliable. Under normal steady-state conditions flagella are always longer than 6 microns, so our analysis covers the length-range that is relevant for length control. As seen in Figure 2D, over this entire range the average number of IFT particle complexes remained roughly constant. Numerical line-fitting indicated that the slope of the number versus length curve was just 0.063 aggregates micron, with an intercept of 7.9 aggregates, indicating that from 6 to 12 length, the number of IFT particle aggregates changes only by about 0.3. We therefore conclude that not only IFT protein levels, but also IFT protein organization into multiparticle complexes, is effectively constant as a function of length. Given that the total quantity of IFT protein per flagellum is in fact independent of length, the balance-point model can be used to predict the kinetics of flagellar regeneration Marshall and Rosenbaum, 2001 ; . The Controlled Substances Act empowered the DEA to regulate all pharmaceutical drugs. In 2002 Glen A. Fine, the inspector general of the Department of Justice, asked why the DEA wasn't doing more to combat prescription drug abuse when it was "a problem equal to cocaine."41 Fine claimed that, while 4.1 million Americans used cocaine in 2001, 6.4 million illegally used prescription narcotic painkillers that same year. He also claimed that the illicit use of pain medication accounted for 30 percent of all emergency room drug-related deaths and injuries. In 2001 the DEA had already announced a major new anti-drug campaign: the OxyContin Action Plan.42 The agency underscored the threat of prescription drug abuse by asserting that the number of people who "abuse controlled pharmaceuticals each year equals the number who abuse cocaine--2 to 4 percent of the U.S. population."43 The agency also claimed that prescription drugs increased the number of overdose deaths by 25 percent and accounted for 20 percent of all emergency room visits for drug overdoses.44 Criticism from Congress and the Department of Justice the following year reaffirmed the agency's determination to crack down on prescription drugs. The OxyContin plan would elevate a legal, prescription drug to the status of cocaine and other Schedule II substances. That shift put pain doctors in the DEA's crosshairs, as susceptible to investigation as conventional drug dealers. In September of 2003, at the 69-count indictment of Virginia doctor William Hurwitz, U.S. Attorney Mark Lytle claimed that the physician was complicit in the deaths of three patients, and compared William Hurwitz to a "streetcorner crack dealer." Lytle further argued that Dr. Hurwitz posed such a threat to the community that he should be denied bail.45 The OxyContin Action Plan bore a remarkable resemblance to the Harrison Act in that it enabled the federal government to prosecute physicians who prescribed an otherwise legal narcotic drug, due to unfounded fears of a "dope menace" sweeping the country. Sulfinpyrazone treatment
Should be given to restricting the use of these drugs for longer periods of time, since they are accumulated in different organs. Thus the overall results of the Ames mutagenicity and the SCE and CA assays in mice indicate that these three antimalarial drugs are very weakly mutagenic in strains TA97a, TA100 and TA104 and are capable of inducing significant SCE and CA in bone marrow cells of mice. Our results of a significant increase in SCE at all three doses and in CA at the highest doses induced by all three drugs fully support the observations of Raj and Heddle 1980 ; and Shubber et al. 1986 ; for CHQ and PRQ in CHO cells in vitro. PRQ induced CA at the two higher doses 50 and 100 mg kg ; compared with CHQ and AMQ, which induced CA only at the highest dose 100 mg kg ; . The increase in CA at the highest dose of PRQ was ~4-fold, compared with 2- to 3-fold for CHQ and AMQ. These observations are in accordance with the known toxicity of PRQ over CHQ and AMQ as reported by several authors. Taking into consideration the risk to humans due to the widespread use of these quinoline derivatives as antimalarial drugs, these findings suggest the necessity of more in vivo genotoxicity and carcinogenicity studies for these drugs. Sulfinpyrazone therapy
On anthroughout the study; ticoagulants because of the development of three or more thrombi in one month and two had anticoagulants discontinued. Of the ten who were started on anticoagulants, eight were started prior to the crossover: seven while on placebo and one while on sulfinpyrazone. Following crossover, two were started on anticoagulants while on placebo and none while on sulfinpyrazone. Two patients had anticoagulants discontinued prior to the crossover: one while on placebo because of pericarditis following a myocardial infarction and the other while on sulfinpyrazone because of dyspepsia. In all, anticoagulants were used for a total of 168 patient months concomitant with placebo and 163 patient months with sulfinpyrazone. It is unlikely, therefore, that the effects of anticoagulants could have biased the interpretation of the results. A summary of the data relating to shunt thrombosis is shown in table 2. It can be seen that the over-all rate of thrombi per patient month was 0.64 during the placebo period, which is three times the corresponding rate during the sulfinpyrazone treatment period. The corresponding ratio was about 4 to 1 for males which was statistically significant, and slightly less than 2 to 1 for females.
